Shanahan University’s Growth Continues: Matriculating 495 Students and Introducing New Programs

Shanahan University, Onitsha, Anambra State, proudly welcomed 495 new students into its academic community during the recently held matriculation ceremony at the university campus. This milestone event marked the beginning of a transformative academic journey for the students, reinforcing the university’s commitment to excellence and holistic education.

A Commitment to Excellence and Discipline

In his address, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Josephat Oguejiofor, urged the newly admitted students to embrace hard work, discipline, and ethical conduct throughout their academic pursuits. He emphasized that Shanahan University, deeply rooted in Christian values and the Catholic faith, is dedicated to instilling strong morals, discipline, and a commitment to lifelong learning.

Prof. Oguejiofor also announced an exciting development in the university’s academic offerings. Initially starting with 19 programmes, Shanahan University has now received approval from the National Universities Commission (NUC) to introduce five additional programmes: Medicine, Physiology, Anatomy, English Language, and Law. This expansion reflects the institution’s mission to provide diverse and competitive educational opportunities that align with global standards.

Scholarship Initiative to Support Students

A major highlight of the matriculation ceremony was the announcement of a 50% tuition fee reduction for all matriculating students, a generous scholarship initiative approved by the Chancellor and proprietor of the university, Archbishop Valerian Okeke. The Vice-Chancellor encouraged students to appreciate this opportunity by upholding good character and academic excellence.

State-of-the-Art Learning Facilities

Shanahan University continues to prioritize academic excellence by providing world-class facilities, including a well-equipped library and a multimedia teaching laboratory, all within a conducive learning environment. Prof. Oguejiofor expressed confidence that these resources would enable students to excel and graduate successfully, ready to contribute meaningfully to society.

He also reminded students of the significance of the matriculation oath, which binds them to respect and obedience to university authorities while maintaining the highest standards of ethical behavior.

A Historic Moment for Onitsha

The Obi of Onitsha, Igwe Alfred Achebe, who attended the ceremony, expressed his deep satisfaction with the establishment of Shanahan University, recognizing it as the only tertiary institution in Onitsha. He commended Archbishop Valerian Okeke for his visionary leadership in founding the university, describing it as a significant advancement in education for the region.

As a strong advocate for education, Igwe Achebe emphasized that the biggest challenge facing Nigeria is the shortage of good leadership. He expressed optimism that Shanahan University graduates will emerge as the future leaders Nigeria needs.

Enrollment and Academic Growth

According to the university’s Registrar, Dr. Emmanuel Emenu, a total of 665 students were offered admission, but due to documentation delays, only 495 students matriculated in this session. The remaining students will complete their admission process in the next academic session.

A Spiritual Foundation for Success

The matriculation ceremony commenced with a Holy Mass celebrated by the Chancellor, Archbishop Valerian Okeke. In his homily, he encouraged students to remain focused and resilient in the face of academic challenges, reminding them that they had embarked on a journey toward success and self-discovery.

A Privilege and Opportunity for Growth

The Chairman of the Board of Trustees, Sir Cletus Ibeto, congratulated the matriculating students, describing them as privileged to be part of Shanahan University. He urged them to take their studies seriously and make the most of this exceptional academic opportunity.
