Historic Orientation for Pioneer Medical Students at Shanahan University, Onitsha

Shanahan University, Onitsha, celebrated a landmark event as we welcomed our first-ever cohort of medical students during their orientation program at the College of Medicine. The day was filled with inspiring speeches, informative sessions, and warm introductions that set the foundation for these future doctors’ academic journey.

A Momentous Welcome Ceremony

The event commenced with registration as our new students arrived filled with anticipation. The academic procession featured our distinguished faculty members, culminating in the arrival of the Vice Chancellor and university management team.

Vice Chancellor Rev. Fr. Prof. Obi Oguejiofor

In his keynote address, Vice Chancellor Rev. Fr. Prof. Obi Oguejiofor shared the inspiring legacy of Bishop Joseph Ignatius Shanahan, the missionary educator after whom our university is named. He emphasized our institution’s commitment to producing not just skilled medical professionals, but compassionate healers who embody our core values of excellence, integrity, and service.

An engaging icebreaker session followed, allowing students and faculty to connect in a more relaxed atmosphere, fostering the camaraderie that will support them throughout their medical education.

Understanding the Medical Program

Prof. EAE, Afiadigwe, Provost of the College of Medicine, provided a comprehensive overview of our medical program. His presentation, titled “Welcome to the Journey of Becoming a Doctor,” detailed our rigorous curriculum that blends:

Building a Supportive Community

After lunch, students engaged with two vital programs:

  1. Mentorship Initiative: Prof. Agbakoba, Dean of Basic Medical Sciences, introduced our structured mentorship program that pairs students with experienced faculty guides.
  2. Conflict Resolution: Madam Assumpta Ifenso, Deputy Registrar and Counselor, shared strategies for maintaining positive relationships and resolving disputes constructively.

The day concluded with an interactive Q&A session where students could address any remaining questions, followed by closing announcements and prayers.
